Independent Record Label in Colombia: The Complete 2026 Guide

Everything you need to know about how an independent record label works in Colombia: contracts, royalties, distribution and artist development.

Colombia has become one of the most active music markets in Latin America, and that growth also brought an explosion of independent record labels competing on equal terms with the big multinationals. But what exactly is an independent label, how does it work legally in Colombia and what should you check before signing with one? This guide answers those questions with information straight from the industry.

What is an independent record label?

An independent record label — also called an indie label — is a company that signs artists, finances the production of their music, distributes it on digital and physical platforms, and manages their artistic career without being controlled by the three global majors: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

The key difference is not size but structure and purpose. A major handles hundreds of artists with teams of dozens of people for each one. An independent label in Colombia typically works with 5 to 20 active artists, which allows far more personalized support at every stage of a career.

The advantages of working with an indie label rather than going fully self-managed are concrete:

  • Production capital: The label takes on the cost of recording, mixing, mastering and distribution. The artist does not pay out of pocket.
  • Infrastructure already in place: Relationships with digital distributors, editorial pitching teams, media contacts and booking networks.
  • Artistic direction: An A&R (Artists and Repertoire) who guides the artist's sonic and commercial decisions with a long-term view.
  • Industry credibility: Being signed to a recognized label opens doors that are much harder to open for an independent artist with no structure.

The trade-off is giving up a share of the income and, in many cases, a degree of creative control. That is why choosing the right label matters as much as the music itself.

How does a record label work in Colombia?

In Colombia, a record label legally operates as a Sociedad por Acciones Simplificada (SAS), the legal form most used for its flexible shareholding structure and low incorporation cost. The company registers its activities with the DIAN under the CIIU code corresponding to sound recording and music publishing activities.

From an operational point of view, a label's work cycle runs like this:

  • A&R and signing: The artistic director identifies talent, assesses the artist's commercial potential and negotiates the contract terms. In Colombia, this process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months of conversations.
  • Production: The label finances and supervises the music production in its own studio or in contracted facilities. It defines the sound of the project according to the target market.
  • Digital distribution: Through distributors such as DistroKid, TuneCore, Believe, or direct agreements, the label places the music on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and other platforms. A label with a track record can access preferential distribution terms an independent artist cannot obtain.
  • Editorial pitching: The playlisting team sends releases to the editorial playlist curators at Spotify and Apple Music weeks ahead of the release date. A good pitch can mean tens of thousands of additional streams from day one.
  • Marketing and social strategy: Campaigns on Meta Ads and TikTok Ads, organic content management and coordination with influencers and specialist media.

Key figure: According to data from the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), independent labels account for more than 40% of the global music market in revenue terms. In Colombia, that share is even higher in urban genres and Latin pop.

Record label contracts: what to check before you sign

A record label contract is one of the most important documents an artist will sign in their career. Before putting your signature on it, review these critical points with a lawyer specializing in intellectual property and entertainment law:

Exclusivity

Most label contracts include an exclusivity clause preventing the artist from recording for another label while the contract is in force. Check the scope: is it total exclusivity or only for certain genres or territories? Can you collaborate with artists outside the label? Can you have parallel projects under a pseudonym?

Royalty split

Royalties are the percentage of the income generated by streams, sales and licensing that the artist receives. In Colombia, the typical ranges at independent labels are:

  • Emerging artists with no track record: between 20% and 35% of net income.
  • Artists with a proven catalog: between 40% and 60%.
  • Co-productions where the artist contributes capital: up to 70%.

Make sure you understand whether the percentage applies to gross or net income (after deducting distribution, production and marketing costs), because the difference can be very significant.

Intellectual property and masters

This is the most sensitive point in any recording contract. The masters are the original recordings of the songs. A contract that assigns the masters to the label means the label owns those recordings forever, unless the contract specifies reversion conditions.

Composition rights (lyrics and melody) are different: they generally stay with the artist or songwriter and are administered by bodies such as SAYCO in Colombia. Even if the label owns the masters, it cannot use the composition without the corresponding rights.

Look for contracts that include a master reversion clause: if the label fails to meet certain distribution or marketing targets within a defined period, the masters return to the artist.

Contract length

Recording contracts in Colombia are usually structured in two ways: by number of releases (e.g. "3 singles and 1 EP") or by time (e.g. "2 years with a renewal option"). Avoid open-ended contracts or automatic renewal options without clear conditions. A term of 1 to 2 years with measurable targets is a reasonable starting point for an emerging artist.

"The best contract is not the one that pays you the most up front, but the one that gives you the most control over your career in the long run. An artist who understands their rights is an artist who builds equity."

LAI Music: a record label model in Medellín

At LAI Music we have operated since 2016 as an independent record label based in Envigado, Antioquia. Our model is designed specifically for emerging artists who need more than a recording studio: they need a complete structure that takes them from talent to career.

Our catalog includes artists such as Julda, whose afrobeats-urban sound has resonated with audiences in multiple countries; Milo Bvgatti, a reference point for drill and trap from Medellín with millions of accumulated streams; and Whiite PF, whose vocal work in contemporary R&B has built a solid fan base on digital platforms.

The process for evaluating new artists at LAI Music works in three stages:

  • First listen: The artist sends demos or references of their current work. Our A&R team assesses sonic potential, visual identity and market proposition.
  • Evaluation session: An in-person or virtual session where we explore the artist's sound, identify strengths and define the development path. This session is free for the artist.
  • Proposal and signing: If there is artistic and commercial fit, we present the contract terms with full transparency. The artist has the right to review it with their own legal adviser before signing.

We do not sign artists to fill a catalog. We sign artists we believe in enough to invest our time, infrastructure and capital.
